This urban intervention reconfigured a portion of a public parking lot to create a temporary plaza, while improving accessibility and expanding available parking.
During the annual Park[ing] Day event, City Fabrick collaborated with the City of Long Beach Planning Bureau to develop a temporary park installation as an example of more efficient land development in the city. Using black and white masking tape, portions of the parking lot on Fourth Street in Downtown Long Beach were restriped to create a space for people for the day. A year later, working together with various community partners, the entire parking lot was reconfigured to create a 30’ by 75’ plaza adjacent to the sidewalk. The initial painted mural included a series of statistics related to open space and environmental sustainability. The temporary public plaza was repainted three years later by Aaron De La Cruz, through a collaboration with the Long Beach Walls street art festival.
