Engagement
As part of the initiative, City Fabrick and partners engaged local residents and stakeholders about the potential for these street plaza projects to be actualized in their neighborhood and how different design concepts might benefit the community. The engagement activities also informed residents about the community environment, safety, and public health benefits of such projects. This demonstration project directly led to the permanent closure and plaza conversion of Rhea Street a few blocks to the north.
Tactical
City Fabrick worked with the Long Beach Community Development Department and Streets Plan, a nonprofit organization, to prototype this pedestrian plaza concept. This involved temporarily closing a half-block of 14th Street into an outdoor space accessible only to pedestrians and bicyclists, programmed for various forms of recreation.
