“Why is that always closed? I wish they would keep [the memorial gate] open so we could place
to sit around here.”
-Neighborhood Resident

The Harding Veteran Memorial Plaza is to be enhanced with additional landscape and hardscape elements to create a sense of destination and place that anchors the southwest corner of Houghton Park, adjacent to the Uptown Business District.

The City conducted a series of workshops to develop the Houghton Park Master Plan Report to create Conceptual Plan that depicts the potential future land use, relationships, function, and circulation improvements. This plan investigates site constraints and opportunities, and promotes understanding and support for the development program. Results from site analysis and community workshop led to the following themes: Improve overall maintenance and condition of the park, encourage positive activities in and around the park, enhance the park's image while respecting its history, maximize open space in the park.

Through the Houghton Park Master Plan process, separate interviews and analysis of the site conditions and users the following specific  goals were developed for improving the Harding Veterans Memorial Plaza:

HONOR
Protect the helicopter while improving accessibility to the memorial

REDUCE
Limit the amount of additional
maintenance and supervision for the site

GROW
Update and expand the landscape/hardscape area of the plaza

STRENGTHEN
Create a stronger identity for the plaza and memorial
