Among a number of other streets, portions of 14th Street in Central Long Beach have been identified by the City of Long Beach as having the potential to be closed to vehicle traffic and transformed into public open space. City Fabrick worked with the Long Beach Department of Development Services and nonprofit organization Streets Plan to prototype this streetlet concept, which involved temporarily closing 14th Street in Central Long Beach to be accessible only to pedestrians, bicyclists, and emergency vehicles and programmed with passive and active forms of recreation. As part of the initiative, City Fabrick and partners engaged local residents and stakeholders about the potential for these projects and as to how different design concepts that can become actualized. City Fabrick is now exploring a permanent version of the street a few blocks to the north as part of an affordable housing development.
